The Blogging Community

A blogging community is a formation of people who are included in a community that is centered around their common interests. There are many ways to create a blogging community especially with the advancements in the web 2.0 tools such as commenting, permalink, RSS (Really Simple Syndication), feedreaders, tagging and mashups to name a few.

White (2006) states that there are three main blogging communities:
  1. One Blog Centric
  2. Topic Centric
  3. Boundaried Community
One blog centric community is when the power is given to the central blogger who sets the topic.  The second community is a network formation of blogs linked by a common topic. Lastly, boundaried communities comprises of blogs and readers that are hosted on one single site.

An example of a blogging community would be Jeffooi.com which is classified as a boundaried community. The blog comprises of various bloggers who publish postings on a single site. Bloggers are able to access each other's blogs as they are all within the same community. Power is vested in the 'owner' of the site however bloggers are still able to exercise their power by the amount of posting, popularity, and if social networking tools are available on the blog.
